The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the latest electric luxury sedan from the German automaker that aims to offer the most technologically advanced vehicle in its class. The EQS is the electric equivalent to the company’s S-class, and it comes packed with a range of features like the Hyperscreen touchscreen, unique driver profiles based on fingerprint scans, and a total of six USB-C ports. The cabin of the vehicle is designed with luxurious materials and offers plenty of space, headrest pillows, massage functions, and neck-and-shoulder heating. However, when it comes to driving performance, the EQS falls short of the basic expectations of a luxury sedan. Its handling is unremarkable, and the brake pedal feel creates a sense of unease.
The new 2023 lineup of the EQS introduces a mid-level EQS450+ 4MATIC model that pairs the lower-powered EQS450+ with the all-wheel drive capability of the more powerful EQS580 4MATIC model. The Pinnacle trim level has been enhanced with revised rear seat cushions and comfort pillows, and a new Executive Rear Seat Package includes adaptive lighting. Additionally, the EQS580 sedan City Edition is sold in Southern California only, with a limit of 150 produced, and it comes with an Unagi Model One Voyage electric scooter, a free ChargePoint Home Flex charger, and other bonuses.
The 2023 EQS comes in three different powertrain configurations and three trim levels. The top Pinnacle trim in the rear-wheel drive EQS450+ guise is recommended as it provides niceties like heated-and-ventilated front and rear seats, massage for front seat passengers, four-zone automatic climate control, and a head-up display. The entry-level EQS450+ packs plenty of punch with 329 horsepower, and it can now be paired with the all-wheel drive system. In comparison, the EQS580 has an all-wheel-drive system, two electric motors, and a total system output of 516 horsepower and 611 pound-feet of torque.
The EQS features lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 107.8 kWh. The 2023 lineup has received an EPA rating and shows the EQS450+ at 350 miles of range and the EQS580 at 340 miles. The EQS can charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in approximately 11 hours and 15 minutes using a 240-volt (Level 2) charger. A DC fast charger can recharge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 35 minutes.
The interior of the EQS has been designed with beautiful, high-quality materials and countless luxury amenities. The EQS now features the MBUX infotainment system, and buyers can opt for the massive 56-inch-long Hyperscreen. The vehicle comes with six USB-C ports throughout the cabin and a Burmester audio system.
The 2023 EQS features standard driver-assistance technology that includes adaptive cruise control and self-parking assist. Safety features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are given as standard. Mercedes’ limited and powertrain warranties are competitive with other German automakers, and its terms are not particularly noteworthy. There is also no complimentary maintenance service for the EQS.
Overall, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is an impressive electric sedan that comes packed with advanced technology and luxury amenities to cater to the needs of premium car buyers. However, the EQS falls short of offering a satisfying driving experience that is expected of a luxury sedan.
