What we have learned to this point

BMW’s latest addition to its EV lineup is the mid-size 2024 i5 sedan, which will fill the gap between the award-winning i4 and the flagship i7. The i5 is expected to offer a combination of driving pleasure and upscale comforts. The vehicle will be offered with two powertrains: the eDrive40, a rear-drive model with 335 horsepower, and the M60 xDrive, a dual-motor model with 590 horsepower and all-wheel drive traction. The i5 is set to face competition from other medium-sized luxury electric cars such as the Genesis Electrified G80, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Porsche Taycan, and Tesla Model S.

The i5 is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2023 as a 2024 model year vehicle. The eDrive40 model is expected to have a longer range than the performance-oriented M60 trim. However, the M60’s 590 horsepower combined with BMW’s active anti-roll bars, sporty suspension tune, wider tires, and rear-wheel steering are expected to give the car a more athletic feel.

The i5 is powered by an 83.9-kWh battery pack, but the EPA has not yet certified its range estimate. The range is expected to be between 250 and 300 miles depending on the model. The i5 will likely feature BMW’s latest iDrive 8.5 system and driving data such as vehicle speed and range.

Safety features are expected to include standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and available adaptive cruise control with a hands-free driving feature. The i5 will also offer BMW’s Highway Assistant feature, which provides access to hands-free driving on select roads.

As more information becomes available, updates will be provided on fuel economy, interior comfort and cargo, as well as warranty and maintenance coverage. Overall, the BMW i5 represents the company’s push towards electrification and is a promising addition to the luxury EV market.
