Mercedes-Benz Adds Power Via OTA Update: EQE350 and EQS450
Mercedes-Benz is taking a novel approach for electric vehicle performance improvement. The automaker has announced that its all-electric EQE350 and EQS450 can now gain power and reduce acceleration times through an over-the-air (OTA) software update called the “Acceleration Increase.” The update will be available for both sedan and SUV models. The EQE350 will add 60 hp while the EQS450 will add 80 hp. The zero-to-60-mph claims for both models will drop between 0.8 and 1.0 second.
Interestingly, this performance update is offered with a subscription plan. Mercedes is the first automaker to offer such a plan as an alternative to purchasing a new car. For car enthusiasts and performance junkies, this is great news, as they can add more power to their existing vehicles without buying a brand new one.
The monthly/yearly subscription for the EQE350 costs $60/$600 and for the EQS450 costs $90/$900. However, Mercedes also offers a one-time fee of $1950 for the EQE and $2950 for the EQS to avoid ongoing subscription fees, which may appeal to some drivers.
The “Acceleration Increase” update will be available through Mercedes me Connect services as it’s rolled out. This approach reflects a trend in the auto industry towards OTA updates, which allow manufacturers to avoid the costly and time-consuming practice of recalling cars for mechanical updates.
